What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine which change led to an observed result and support that link with evidence. They plan a fair test by changing one variable, measuring the response, and keeping other conditions the same.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a phenomenon or data set, students name the cause, effect, evidence, and a reasonable mechanism. They distinguish causal evidence from coincidence and revise claims that the data do not support.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume that one event caused another simply because it happened first. They may confuse correlation with causation, change several variables at once, or ignore evidence that challenges their claim.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Two identical ice cubes are placed under a lamp, one 20 centimeters away and one 60 centimeters away. Identify the cause, effect, controlled variables, and evidence that would support a causal claim.

Discuss this prompt: School absences rose during a flu outbreak, so what evidence would show that flu caused the increase?
Sort cards into cause, effect, supporting evidence, and coincidence, then defend one disputed match to a partner.
