What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate useful summaries such as mean, median, and range. They find trends, clusters, and outliers, then explain possible errors and limits in the data.

- A student chooses and calculates an appropriate summary correctly. They support a pattern with specific values and explain how an error source or limitation could affect the conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every outlier as a mistake or confuse range with a trend. They may name vague errors, ignore small sample sizes, or claim that a pattern proves cause and effect.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For trial results 2, 3, 3, 4, and 12 cm, calculate the mean and range, identify one pattern or outlier, and state one possible error source and one limitation.

Measure cooling water at one-minute intervals, graph class results, compare ranges and outliers, then trace inconsistent readings to measurement choices.
Give pairs two plant-growth data tables and ask, "Which conclusion is best supported, and what feature or limitation affects your confidence?"
