What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use graphs, maps, and data tables to connect human actions with long-term climate patterns. They explain how added greenhouse gases, loss of forests, and expanding paved areas change energy flow, carbon storage, or local temperatures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a clear claim and support it with relevant data. They describe a reasonable cause-and-effect link and separate long-term climate trends from short-term weather events.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse climate with daily weather or think one cold day disproves warming. They may mix up the greenhouse effect with ozone loss, or assume deforestation and urbanization affect climate through the same process.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A city’s tree cover fell from 40% to 20%, paved area increased, and average summer nighttime temperature rose 1.5°C. Use two data points to explain the change.

Place soil, grass, and black pavement samples under lamps, record temperatures every two minutes, then compare heating and cooling rates.
Show a 50-year carbon dioxide and temperature graph, then ask students to write a claim, two evidence statements, and one reasoning statement.
