What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use graphs, models, and other evidence to explain how natural events and human actions can change climate. They also trace carbon as it moves among the atmosphere, oceans, organisms, soil, and rocks.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify a climate driver, cite evidence, and explain the resulting temperature or carbon change. They accurately model carbon sources, sinks, and transfers without confusing climate trends with daily weather.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat weather and climate as the same, or assume every volcanic eruption causes long-term warming. They may confuse greenhouse gases with ozone or believe carbon disappears when absorbed. Some identify correlation in a graph as proof of cause.

How to Assess It

Give students a carbon dioxide and temperature graph plus a carbon cycle diagram. Ask them to cite two data points, explain one climate influence, and trace one carbon pathway.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use colored beads and labeled reservoir cups to model carbon moving through photosynthesis, respiration, combustion, ocean absorption, and sedimentation.

  2. Ask students to write a claim explaining whether a volcanic eruption would cause short-term cooling, long-term warming, or both, using provided evidence.

  3. Have teams sort event cards into carbon source, carbon sink, short-term climate effect, or long-term climate effect, then defend disputed choices.

  4. Compare satellite images of a nearby city and surrounding rural land, then connect pavement, vegetation loss, and energy use to local temperature patterns.
