What Students Need to Do: Students identify whether a statement is a testable proposed explanation, a broad evidence-based explanation, or a description of a consistent natural pattern. They justify each choice using purpose and evidence, not how certain it sounds.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify examples and explain that hypotheses are tested, theories explain, and laws describe patterns. They also explain why theories do not become laws after gaining evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students often think a hypothesis is just a guess. They may treat theories as weak ideas or assume theories eventually become laws. They may also think laws explain why a pattern occurs.
How to Assess It: Ask students to classify these three statements: a plant growth prediction, kinetic molecular theory, and the pressure-volume relationship for gases. Have them give one reason for each choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs 12 statement cards to sort into three labeled groups, then require one written justification for each group.
Ask students to answer, "Why does a well-supported theory not graduate into a law?" using the words explain and describe.
Run a classification relay where teams label science scenarios and earn a point only when their spoken reason is accurate.
Use bicycle tire pressure to compare a gas law that describes the pattern with particle theory that explains the pattern.
