What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a tool that fits the question and measurement. They use it safely, read it correctly, and record data with metric units and labels.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can select and set up a tool without prompting. Their readings are accurate, include units, and can be repeated with similar results.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar tool instead of the best tool for the task. They may skip zeroing a balance, misread a meniscus or scale, or record numbers without units.

How to Assess It

Place water, a graduated cylinder, thermometer, balance, and ruler at a station. Ask students to choose the needed tools, measure volume and temperature, and record both results with units.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations where students measure water volume, block mass, string length, and water temperature, then compare readings with a partner.

  2. Ask students to write: Which tool would give the best evidence for each measurement, and why would another tool be less useful?

  3. Play Tool Match with cards showing investigation tasks, tools, and units; teams race to build correct sets and explain one choice.

  4. Use a weather map and temperature probe to compare the forecast with outdoor conditions recorded at the same time each day.
