- Students choose a tool that matches the measurement or observation they need. They use it safely, read it correctly, and record data with suitable metric units and precision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a lab task, students select the correct tool and explain why it fits. They take repeatable measurements, read scales properly, and record clear results in a lab notebook.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar tool instead of the best tool for the job. They may confuse mass with force, misread scale intervals, or report digits the tool cannot measure.
How to Assess It
- Give students four tasks: measure liquid volume, find a rock's mass, view onion cells, and test acidity. Ask them to name each tool and explain one correct use step.
