What Students Need to Do
- Students choose the right scientific tool for a task and use it safely. They take measurements, record correct metric units, and organize observations in a lab notebook.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can select a graduated cylinder for liquid volume, a balance for mass, and a thermometer for temperature. Measurements include units and reflect the tool's scale.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a beaker for precise volume, read a liquid above or below eye level, or confuse mass with weight. They may record numbers without units or estimate beyond the tool's markings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a graduated cylinder, balance, ruler, and thermometer. Ask them to choose the correct tool for four measurement tasks and explain each choice.
