What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students describe how waves carry energy from one place to another without carrying matter along with them. They compare particle motion in transverse waves and longitudinal waves.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can use a diagram or model to show the direction of energy transfer and particle motion. They explain that particles move perpendicular to energy in transverse waves and parallel to energy in longitudinal waves.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think particles travel with a wave from its source to its destination. They may also confuse particle motion with energy direction or assume sound is transverse because it is often drawn as a curved line.

How to Assess It

On an exit ticket, have students sketch a rope wave and a compression wave in a spring toy. Ask them to label particle motion and energy direction on each sketch.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use a rope and a spring toy to model both wave types, then mark particle motion and energy direction with arrow cards.

  2. Write: How can a stadium wave move around the stands when each person stays near one seat?

  3. Play a card sort matching wave diagrams, particle motion, energy direction, and examples such as sound, light, and rope waves.

  4. Compare how sound reaches a listener through air with how a radio signal carries energy from a tower to a phone.
