What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine fossil shapes, structures, and locations for clues about past environments. They use common Texas fossils, such as ammonites, oysters, and mammoth remains, to infer whether an area was once ocean, grassland, or another habitat.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a fossil and describe the environment where its organism likely lived. They support the description with visible fossil evidence and explain how the area has changed over time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all fossils are dinosaur bones or that every fossil formed on land. They may assume a shell fossil came from a modern beach rather than an ancient sea. Some treat an environment claim as a guess without naming evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show an image of an ammonite found in Texas. Ask, “What was this area like long ago, and what fossil evidence supports your answer?”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups fossil casts or photos to sort onto ocean, grassland, forest, and swamp environment mats, then require one evidence statement per fossil.
Ask students to write: “How could a shell fossil in dry central Texas show that the environment changed?”
