What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use physical models, diagrams, or image sequences to show how rock breaks apart, sediment moves, and sediment settles elsewhere. They explain how flowing water, wind, and moving ice reshape land over long periods.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given before and after images of a landform, students identify the process, the cause, and visible evidence. In a model, they track sediment and distinguish breakdown, transport, and settling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often call every surface change erosion, including rock breaking apart or sediment settling. They may think deposition removes material rather than builds up land. They may also expect major changes to happen quickly or overlook moving ice as a cause.
How to Assess It
- Give students a sketch showing a cracked cliff, a river, and a sandbar. Have them label weathering, erosion, and deposition, draw sediment arrows, and name the cause of each change.
