What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a tool that fits the question they are investigating. They use it safely to observe, measure, or test. They record measurements with correct metric units and use the results to answer questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select and use an appropriate tool without prompting. Their readings are accurate, include units, and are recorded clearly. They can explain why the tool fits the task and what the data show.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat beaker markings as precise volume measurements or begin ruler measurements at the ruler’s edge instead of zero. They may confuse mass, volume, and temperature or attach the wrong unit. Some students think a calculator can replace careful measuring.
How to Assess It
- Give students a cup of water and ask them to measure its volume and temperature, record both with units, and name each tool used.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure water temperature, object mass, liquid volume, and length, then record each result with the correct unit.
Ask, “Which tool gives the best evidence for each property, and why would another tool give weaker evidence?”
Play Tool Match: teams pair investigation cards with tool cards, name the unit, and explain how the tool will be used.
Have students inspect classroom plants, using a hand lens, ruler, thermometer, and camera to create a weekly habitat health record.
