What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose simple tools to observe, measure, test, and compare objects or materials. They use the tools safely and record what they notice with drawings or words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a useful tool, such as a hand lens for details, cubes for length, or a sieve for sorting materials. The student uses it correctly and explains what the tool helped them find.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat tools as toys or choose a tool without thinking about its purpose. They may leave gaps when measuring with cubes, or report guesses instead of observations.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two leaves, a hand lens, cubes, and a notebook. Say, “Use the tools to show one way the leaves are alike or different.”

Ways to Teach It
Place sand, gravel, and soil on trays, then have students use cups, hand lenses, and sieves to observe and separate them.
Ask, “Which tool would help you study a seed closely, and what might you notice?” Students draw and explain their choice.
Play a tool-matching game where students pair picture cards showing tools with tasks such as measuring rain, viewing details, or comparing length.
Set up a windsock and rain gauge outside, then let students check them daily and report the weather evidence.
