What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a tool that matches the question they are investigating. They use it safely, record observations or measurements with units, and use the results to answer the question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select and use tools without step-by-step help. They read scales correctly, record reasonable results, and explain what the data show.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse tools for measuring mass, volume, length, and temperature. They may start measuring at the ruler’s edge instead of zero, misread scale intervals, or omit units.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a rock, a metric ruler, and a digital scale. Ask students to measure its longest dimension and mass, then record both results with correct units.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure a leaf, water, room temperature, and a rock, then record each result with units.
Ask, “Which tool would give the best evidence about today’s weather, and why?” then have students defend their choice.
Play Tool Match Relay by pairing task cards with tool cards and metric unit cards.
