What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name familiar jobs and identify abilities people use to do them. They connect skills such as counting, listening, drawing, or building to specific work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose a familiar job and name one or two matching skills. The student can explain how each skill helps the worker.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name tools instead of skills, such as saying a cook needs a pan. They may also think each job uses only one skill.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a cook, teacher, and builder. Ask, “Choose one worker and name two things that worker must know how to do.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs worker picture cards and skill cards, then have them match each worker to a skill and explain the match.
Ask, “What does a veterinarian need to know or do?” Record answers, then sort them into skills and tools.
Play Job Skill Charades: one student acts out counting, drawing, listening, or building, and classmates name a job that uses it.
Invite a custodian, nurse, or cafeteria worker to share two job skills, then students draw one skill in action.
