Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students compare real numbers written as fractions, decimals, integers, radicals, and expressions involving π. They use estimates or equivalent forms to place the values from least to greatest or greatest to least.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sequence positive and negative values written in several forms. They use decimal approximations, benchmarks, or number-line placement to explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a longer decimal is always larger or misorder negative numbers. They may compare fractions, radicals, and π without first estimating or converting them.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Arrange −√5, −2.1, 0.45, 3/8, and π/2 from least to greatest, then justify one comparison.

Lesson moves

Give groups cards with fractions, decimals, radicals, and π expressions, then have students place them on a taped floor number line.
Ask students to explain which is greater, −√10 or −3.2, without a calculator, using a written estimate or benchmark.
Play Order Relay, where teams draw four number cards, arrange them correctly, and earn a point only after explaining one comparison.
Have students rank temperatures, account balances, elevations, and distances from sea level after rewriting each value as a decimal estimate.
