What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can model a situation, solve it, and graph the result with the correct endpoint and shading. Given 3x + 8 ≤ 29, the student writes x ≤ 7 and creates a realistic matching situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often use = for phrases such as “at most” or reverse < and > because they focus on word order. They may use the wrong endpoint, shade the wrong direction, or forget to reverse the sign after dividing by a negative. Their stories may swap the fixed amount and rate, so the context does not match the expression.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A gym charges $12 plus $5 per class. Mia can spend at most $47. Write an inequality, solve it, and graph the solution.”

Place integer cards on a taped floor number line, then have pairs graph solution cards using a hoop for the endpoint and yarn for shading.
