What Students Need to Do

Students use objects or drawings to show repeated groups of the same fraction. They connect the model to a multiplication equation and find the product.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given 4 × 2/3, a student draws four equal wholes, divides each into thirds, and shades two thirds in each. The student finds 8/3, or 2 2/3, and explains how the model matches the equation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply both the numerator and denominator, writing 4 × 2/3 as 8/12. They may also divide several wholes into unequal parts or shade the fraction only once.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Draw an area model for 3 × 3/4, label each factor, and write the product as a fraction or mixed number.
