What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare common ways to pay and identify benefits and drawbacks for each one. They consider convenience, fees, security, debt, available funds, and proof of payment.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare checks, credit cards, debit cards, and electronic payments using cost, speed, safety, acceptance, and record keeping. They can choose a suitable method for a situation and explain the tradeoff.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think credit and debit cards take money from the same place. They may also assume every payment method is accepted everywhere or that electronic payments have no risks or fees.

How to Assess It

Give students four payment options for buying a $40 school jacket. Ask them to choose one, then name one advantage and one disadvantage of that choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a classroom store where students pay with sample checks, cards, and digital payment slips, then record how each transaction works.

  2. Ask students to write which payment method they would use for an online purchase and explain one benefit and one risk.

  3. Play a matching game that pairs payment scenarios with suitable methods, then have students defend or challenge each match.

  4. Compare payment choices for groceries, rent, a phone app purchase, and an emergency repair, including possible fees and available funds.
