What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why common taxes are charged and what each one applies to. They connect each tax to earnings, paycheck deductions, purchases, or property ownership.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students match each tax to the event that causes it and explain who pays it. They distinguish taxes on earnings, paycheck deductions, purchases, and owned property.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every paycheck deduction is income tax. They may also confuse sales tax with property tax or assume Texas residents pay state income tax.
How to Assess It
- Give students four situations: earning wages, reading paycheck deductions, buying shoes, and owning a home. Have them name and define the tax in each situation.

Ways to Teach It
Set up four labeled stations with a paycheck, store receipt, tax form, and home appraisal, then have groups match each item to a tax.
Ask students to write which taxes might affect a worker who earns money, buys lunch, and owns a home.
Play tax sort with scenario cards, and award a point when teams name the tax and explain their choice.
Examine a local store receipt and county property tax statement, then identify what is taxed and how the amount is determined.
