What Students Need to Do
- Students use objects to split one collection into equal groups. They create a matching story and explain the total, number of groups, and objects in each group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 12 counters and 3 mats, a student distributes every counter and shows 4 on each mat. The student can invent a matching story and explain why the groups are equal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make groups that are close in size but not equal. They may leave objects unused or confuse the number of groups with the number in each group. Some assume every collection must be split into two groups.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use 15 counters to show 5 equal groups. Draw the model and write one sentence naming the total, number of groups, and amount in each group.

Give pairs 18 cubes and six paper plates, then have them deal cubes one at a time until every plate matches.
