What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather simple data and place each item into one of up to three clear groups. They record totals, build picture and bar-type graphs, and use the graphs to answer and ask questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately sort a set into one, two, or three groups and record each total. They create a labeled picture or bar-type graph and use it to compare groups and answer questions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count pictures instead of using the graph scale, or make bars that do not match the data. They may also mix categories, skip labels, or answer from personal opinion instead of graph evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students this data: apple, banana, apple, orange, banana, apple. Ask them to make a tally chart and picture graph, then write which fruit appears most.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 15 buttons to sort by color, record with tally marks, and build a bar-type graph using connecting cubes.
Display a class graph and ask, "What do you notice, and what evidence from the graph supports your answer?"
Play Graph Detective by giving students a graph and question cards about most, least, equal, and total amounts.
Survey classmates about three snack choices, graph the results, and use the data to choose a snack for a class event.
