What Students Need to Do: Students use rulers, measuring tapes, or metersticks to find an object’s length. They line up zero with one end and read the scale at the other end.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student aligns one end of an object with zero and reads the mark at the other end. The student names the unit and understands that lengths can fall between labeled marks.
Common Misconceptions: Students may start at the ruler’s edge instead of zero. They may count marks rather than spaces, leave gaps, or report a number without a unit.
How to Assess It: Give each student a crayon and a centimeter ruler. Ask them to measure its length, then circle the zero point and endpoint they used.

Lesson moves

Have pairs measure pencils, crayons, and books with rulers, recording each length and checking that every object begins at zero.
Ask students to explain why starting at the ruler’s edge can give a different answer than starting at zero.
Play Measure and Match by giving students object cards and length cards to pair after measuring each classroom object.
Measure spaces for classroom items, such as a book on a shelf or a pencil in a box, to see whether they fit.
