What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students line up one end of an object with the zero mark on an appropriate measuring tool. They read the endpoint and name the nearest marked unit with its label.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place the object at the zero mark and keep the tool straight. They identify the endpoint, choose the closest labeled unit, and report the length with the correct unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start counting at 1 instead of aligning the object with 0. They may read the wrong scale, switch units, or ignore which mark is closest to the endpoint.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a ruler and a pencil. Ask them to measure the pencil to the nearest inch, then mark the ruler line they used.
