What Students Need to Do
- Students group flat shapes by features they can see and feel, including sides, corners, straight edges, and curved edges. They describe their sorting rule in everyday words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given mixed shape cards, students can group them by features such as straight edges, curved edges, sides, or corners. They can explain each grouping and recognize that more than one sort may work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sort by color, size, or direction instead of shape features. They may think a turned square is not a square. They may also reject uneven or unusual figures as shapes.
How to Assess It
- Give students six printed shapes. Ask them to sort the shapes in two different ways and state the rule for each sort.

Place paper shape cutouts in two hoops, then have students sort by curved edges, straight edges, or number of corners.
Show three shapes and ask, "Which two belong together, and what feature makes them a pair?"
