What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what happens first, next, and last in a simple nonfiction passage or procedure. With teacher prompts, they place events or directions in order and explain their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After hearing a short how-to text, a student correctly orders three or four picture cards. The student uses words such as first, next, then, and last when retelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the most exciting step as the first step. They may skip a middle step or confuse page order with the order actions happen.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: “Put soil in a cup. Make a hole. Drop in a seed. Add water.” Give students four matching picture cards to order and retell.

Ways to Teach It
After reading about handwashing, have pairs arrange four picture cards and glue them onto a first, next, then, last strip.
Ask, “Why must the lid go on after the jar is filled?” Have students answer using first, next, and last.
Play Sequence Switch: display three process cards, secretly swap two, and let students identify and fix the mixed-up steps.
Photograph students packing a backpack, then use the photos to create and orally retell an ordered how-to chart.
