What Students Need to Do: Students choose a focused question and decide how they will find and record information. With an adult, they put the steps in order, follow them, and make changes when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can state a clear question and choose a book, website, video, or person as a source. With adult support, the student orders steps, follows them, and checks off completed work.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a broad topic instead of asking a focused question. They may gather random facts, skip planning steps, or think the plan cannot change.
How to Assess It: Give students the question, “How do frogs grow?” Ask them to draw or write three steps they would follow and name one source.
