What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how an informational passage is organized with teacher support. They decide whether it tells events or steps in sequence or gives details about a person, place, animal, or thing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can tell whether a short passage presents events in sequence or gives details about a topic. They point to time words, ordered steps, or descriptive details as evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any list is in time order, even when the details can be moved around. They may also confuse describing an animal's features with telling what the animal does first, next, and last.

How to Assess It

Give students one short paragraph about making toast and one about a turtle's features. Ask them to label each paragraph and underline the words or details that helped them decide.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs four picture cards showing a plant growing, then have them order the cards and explain which clues show the sequence.

  2. Read two short passages and ask, "Does each author tell what happened in order or give details about one topic?"

  3. Play a sorting game with passage cards labeled sequence or description, requiring students to name one clue before placing each card.

  4. Compare a simple recipe with an animal fact card, then discuss why each text organizes information differently.
