- A student correctly names who the story is mostly about. The student describes that person or animal using a relevant action, feeling, trait, or picture detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the character they like best instead of the one the story focuses on. They may name every character or describe appearance without mentioning actions or feelings.
How to Assess It
- Read a short picture book, then ask, “Who is the story mostly about? Draw that character and tell one detail about them.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs character picture cards from a familiar story, then have them sort the main character from other characters and explain their choice.
After reading, ask, “Who is the story mostly about, and what did that character do?” Record answers with drawings and labels.
