What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students handle a book correctly and move through its pages in order. They follow print across a line and move back to the beginning of the next line.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student independently positions a book, opens it at the beginning, and turns one page at a time. The student tracks words across each line, then moves to the start of the next line.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin at the back, turn several pages at once, or track print in the wrong direction. They may continue across the page instead of moving to the next line.
How to Assess It
- Hand each student a familiar picture book. Ask, “Show me how you would hold this book, turn a page, and point while I read.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture books and have them practice finding the front, holding each book correctly, and turning one page at a time.
Ask, “Where does my finger go next?” while pointing to the final word on a line during a read-aloud.
Place arrow cards under words in a pocket-chart sentence, then let students move a pointer in the reading direction.
Examine menus, signs, or cereal boxes and trace where a reader would begin and how the eyes would move.
