What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write literary, informational, argumentative, and correspondence pieces for different purposes and audiences. They use genre structures, focused ideas, supporting details, clear organization, and purposeful word choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a structure, tone, and craft moves that fit the genre, audience, and purpose. Their writing has a focused idea, organized development, specific details, and an effective ending.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse an informational thesis with an argumentative claim or give opinions without evidence. They may treat narratives as event lists, assume poetry must rhyme, or use casual language in formal correspondence.

How to Assess It

Give students four prompts, one for each genre. Have them choose one, write an opening, and label two genre features they used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cut-up samples of a narrative, poem, essay, argument, and letter to sort, label, and rebuild using genre clues.

  2. Ask students to explain how the same school event would change when written as a narrative, news article, argument, or complaint email.

  3. Play Genre Switch: students draw a topic card and genre card, then write a fitting opening before passing both cards to a partner.

  4. Have students write a polite email to the librarian requesting a book, giving a reason, and using a clear subject line and closing.
