Students dictate or write personal narratives, poems, procedures, thank-you notes, and letters. They use the structure and language that fit each form and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a form that fits their purpose and include recognizable features. Narratives have ordered events, poems use intentional words and lines, procedures give clear steps, and letters include a greeting and closing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every poem must rhyme or that a personal narrative can be invented. They may leave procedures out of order or write letters without a greeting and closing.

How to Assess It

Give this exit prompt: “Write or dictate either a four-step procedure or a thank-you note. Include two features that fit your chosen form.”

   Have students arrange picture cards for washing hands, then dictate or write numbered steps with a title.

   Ask, “Which form best fits a lost tooth story, a poem, or a letter, and why?” Then students write their choice.

   Play Genre Sort by matching sample pages to personal narrative, poetry, procedure, or letter and naming one clue.

   Write thank-you notes to a school helper, including a greeting, a specific reason, and a closing.
