What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write for several purposes, including telling stories, explaining topics, making arguments, and communicating through letters or emails. They choose structures, evidence, details, and language that match each genre and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students organize several paragraphs around a focused purpose and use details, transitions, and word choice that fit the genre. They can write narratives, poems, informational essays, arguments, and correspondence with the expected structure and tone.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix genres, such as adding unsupported opinions to an informational essay or treating an argument as a list of facts. They may write a topic instead of a focused thesis, skip paragraph structure, or use the same tone in friendly and business letters.

How to Assess It

Use an exit ticket: “Choose one school issue. Write a thesis, name the best genre, and draft an opening paragraph that fits that genre.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students envelopes of cut-up mentor texts, then have them rebuild each text and label the structural clues that reveal its genre.

  2. Ask students to write one event as a personal narrative, then explain which details and craft choices make it literary.

  3. Play Genre Switch: students draw a topic and genre card, then draft a fitting opening before classmates identify the genre clues.

  4. Have students write a business email requesting information from a museum, library, or community program, using a clear subject line and polite tone.
