What Students Need to Do: Students share accurate facts about a familiar topic and explain a process in order. They can speak their ideas for an adult to record or write and draw them independently.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives accurate facts about one topic and groups related ideas together. For a how-to piece, the student names the task and presents complete steps in a sensible order.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write a story instead of giving facts or directions. They may leave out needed steps, put steps out of order, or assume the reader already knows what to do.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: “Explain how to wash your hands in three steps.” Check for clear order, accurate actions, and sequence words.

Lesson moves

Have students make a paper hat, then draw and label each step so a partner can follow the directions.
Ask, “How is a fact page different from directions?” Students name one feature of each and give an example.
Give pairs mixed-up picture cards for planting a seed, then have them order the cards and write matching steps.
Create a class guide explaining how to care for classroom supplies, including labeled pictures and ordered directions.
