What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students join a focused conversation, listen closely, build on classmates’ points, and ask useful follow-up questions. They give specific feedback politely and show how they used feedback to improve an idea.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student refers to a classmate’s point, adds relevant thinking, and invites others into the conversation. The student gives clear, respectful suggestions and explains whether and how those suggestions will improve the work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think feedback means giving praise, pointing out flaws, or correcting grammar only. They may wait to speak instead of listening, or assume accepting feedback means agreeing with every suggestion.
How to Assess It
- Pair students for a three-minute discussion: “Should seventh graders have homework every night?” Each student must build on one point, give one specific suggestion, and explain how they would use received feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups comment cards to sort into specific, vague, helpful, and unhelpful piles, then rewrite two weak comments.
Discuss, “Should phones be allowed during lunch?” and require each speaker to build on or question a previous point.
Play Feedback Relay, where partners improve a short paragraph through three rounds of one specific suggestion and one revision.
Role-play a school newspaper meeting where editors pitch article ideas, receive peer comments, and explain which suggestions they will use.
