What Students Need to Do
- Students add suffixes to base words and make needed spelling changes. They decide when to remove a final e, replace y with i, or repeat a final consonant.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can correctly form words such as making, carried, and running, then name the rule used. The student also keeps the base spelling unchanged when no change is needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often write makeing, carryed, or runing because they simply attach the suffix. They may change every final y, overlook vowel patterns, or double consonants in words such as raining.
How to Assess It
- Give the bases hope, carry, run, and play with the suffixes -ing, -ed, -ing, and -ed. Ask students to write each new word and label the rule used.
