What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students separate unfamiliar words into a base word and a suffix. They notice spelling adjustments where the parts join, then use both parts to pronounce and understand the word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly read words such as making, happier, and running. They can identify the base word and explain the spelling adjustment that appears before the suffix.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse pairs such as hoping and hopping because they miss the doubled consonant. They may keep every base-word letter, producing makeing, happyness, or runing, or change words that need no adjustment.
How to Assess It
- Give students making, happier, running, and careless. Have them underline each suffix, identify the base word, describe any spelling change, and read each word aloud.

Give pairs base-word and suffix cards, then have students build making, happier, and running by swapping letter tiles before reading each word aloud.
Have students write two sentences explaining why hope becomes hoping, happy becomes happier, and run becomes running.
Play a sorting relay with word cards labeled drop e, change y, double consonant, or no change, then read each word.
Students scan a lunch menu or sports article for suffixed words, circle each base word, and explain any spelling change.
