What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain what they learned from research in their own words. They select relevant details from sources and use them to support a clear conclusion or answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can state a clear finding in their own words and support it with relevant details from multiple sources. They can explain how the details connect to the research question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy sentences from sources without explaining what they mean. They may list unrelated facts, confuse opinions with findings, or make claims the sources do not support.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source notes about one topic. Ask them to write two sentences explaining the main finding and cite two supporting details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups fact cards about an animal, then have them sort the cards and build a poster showing one supported finding.

  2. Ask students to write: What did your research teach you, and which two details best support that conclusion?

  3. Play Evidence Match by having students pair conclusion cards with supporting source notes, then explain each match to a partner.

  4. Use school lunch survey results to write a recommendation supported by two data points and one student comment.
