What Students Need to Do: Students explain what they learned after gathering information from sources. They organize facts, answer their research question, and share the answer in their own words.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives a clear answer to the research question and supports it with accurate facts. The student explains the ideas in their own words through speaking, writing, or a labeled visual.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy a sentence from a source without explaining it. They may list interesting facts that do not answer the research question. Some mix opinions with facts or include details they cannot verify.
How to Assess It: Give students two short source cards about bees. Ask them to answer, “How do bees help plants?” and support the answer with two facts.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture and text cards about frogs to sort by habitat, food, and life cycle, then create a labeled poster.
Ask, “What did you learn, and which fact best supports your answer?” Students discuss, then write three sentences.
Play a matching game where students pair research questions with evidence cards and explain each match before earning a point.
Students compare two classroom pets using care guides, then recommend one and support their choice with facts.
