What Students Need to Do
- Students explain what their research notes mean, using their own words. They connect facts from one or more sources to the research question and draw a supported conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can summarize gathered information in their own words and group related details. The student can explain how specific facts answer the research question and identify gaps that need more research.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy facts word for word without explaining them. They may list unrelated details, confuse a source’s claim with evidence, or include information that does not answer the research question.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and ask: “What does this information help you understand about the topic? Use two details in your answer.”

Give groups fact cards about one animal, then have them sort the cards by subtopic and explain each group’s main idea.
