What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare words one letter at a time from left to right. When beginning letters match, they use the next letter to decide which word comes first.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly order mixed word lists, including words that share the same first two letters. They compare one letter at a time and explain which letter determined the order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may look only at the first letter or sort by word length. They may also skip the second letter when words begin alike, or treat later letters as more important than earlier ones.
How to Assess It
- Give students can, cat, cap, and car. Ask them to put the words in dictionary order and underline the letter that decided each placement.

Give groups word cards such as ship, shut, shop, and shed to arrange, then have them mark the deciding letters.
