What Students Need to Do

Students write stories, poems, reports, directions, and letters for clear purposes. They use the structure, language, and features that fit each kind of writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a form that fits the purpose and audience. Their writing includes recognizable features, such as plot, poetic language, facts, ordered steps, or letter parts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every piece as a story with characters and a plot. They may also confuse reports with procedures or leave out greetings, closings, sequence words, and poetry features.

How to Assess It

Give students a purpose, such as explaining how to plant a seed, and ask them to name the best genre and write four fitting sentences.

   Give pairs sample stories, poems, reports, procedures, and letters to sort, then have them label the clues that identify each form.

   Ask students to write which form they would use to share a memory, teach a task, or thank someone, and explain why.

   Play Genre Challenge by drawing a purpose card and writing a matching opening before classmates guess the form.

   Have students write a thank you note to a school worker or create directions for a classroom routine.
