What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread drafts to find fragments and sentences where the subject and verb do not match. They add missing subjects or verbs and choose verb forms that fit one or many subjects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify the subject and verb in a sentence and tell whether both are present. The student independently fixes fragments and selects a verb that matches a singular or plural subject.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a group of words as complete because it sounds finished when read aloud. They may write errors such as “The dogs barks” or use “is” with plural subjects.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite both so each is complete and correct: “The puppies plays outside.” “Chasing a ball.”

Give pairs subject and verb strips, then have students build complete sentences and repair mismatched pairs such as “birds sings.”
Ask students to explain why “My friends runs” sounds wrong, then write a corrected sentence and name the subject.
