What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students introduce themselves and other people using clear names and details. They share a personal experience with a classmate and explain what they need or how they feel.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students speak clearly enough for a classmate to understand. They name people, share a brief experience in order, and use appropriate words to explain a need or feeling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a name without explaining who the person is. They may tell events out of order, use unclear words such as “it,” or demand something instead of making a clear request.
How to Assess It
- Pair students and ask each child to introduce the partner, share one recent experience, and state one need or feeling. Check for clear words, relevant details, and turn-taking.

Ways to Teach It
Use puppets and name cards to role-play meeting a new classmate, presenting a partner, requesting a pencil, and naming a feeling.
Ask partners, “What did you do after school, and how did you feel?” Then have each student retell the partner’s answer.
Play Communication Charades: students draw a need or feeling card, say it in a clear sentence, and classmates identify it.
Practice asking the librarian for help finding a book, then saying how you feel when the book is found.
