What Students Need to Do: Students copy, continue, and make simple patterns with concrete objects. They identify the repeating part and preserve its order.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student duplicates an AB or AAB object pattern exactly and extends it several places. The student creates a new simple pattern and describes its repeating part.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy colors or shapes without preserving their order. They may extend a pattern by repeating the last object instead of the repeating unit.
How to Assess It: Build a red-blue-blue pattern with cubes. Ask the student to copy it, add six objects, and create a different simple pattern.

Lesson moves

Build repeating patterns with cubes, buttons, or shapes, then cover the final objects for students to extend.
Ask students to point to the smallest part that repeats in an object pattern.
Play Pattern Repair by finding and replacing one misplaced object.
