What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students generate number or shape patterns from a given rule. They identify and informally explain features that appear even though the rule does not state them directly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student applies the rule consistently and extends the pattern. The student notices a secondary feature, such as alternating parity, and explains how the rule produces it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply a rule to the term number rather than the previous term. They may name a feature without connecting it to the generating rule.
How to Assess It
- Give the rule add 3 starting at 2. Ask students to list six terms, identify an unstated feature, and explain why it occurs.
