What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students model objects in their environment by building and drawing shapes. They learn both methods and choose either building or drawing when answering a particular modeling question.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student builds a simple classroom table with rectangular blocks and draws a window with a rectangle. The student names the shapes and explains how the model resembles the object.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus on decoration rather than the object's main shapes or add parts unrelated to the model. They may believe a model must match the object's exact size, color, or detail.

How to Assess It

Ask the student to choose a familiar classroom object and model it by building or drawing shapes. Have the student name the shapes and explain the connection.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build simple object models with blocks, then draw the same objects using flat shapes and compare the representations.

  2. Ask students which shapes capture the most important parts of a chosen classroom object.

  3. Play object-model match with environmental pictures, block constructions, shape drawings, and spoken explanations.

  4. Model a playground structure, vehicle, or classroom item by building or drawing its main shapes.
