The Standard
Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students join familiar flat or solid shapes to make a larger figure. They then treat that composite as a piece and combine it again to create something new.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student combines two triangles into a rectangle and names the pieces used. The student can join that rectangle with another shape or combine solid blocks into a larger structure.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps or overlap pieces and still count the outline as the intended composite. They may also think a composite has only one possible decomposition or cannot be rearranged.
How to Assess It
- Give the student two triangles and a square. Ask for two different composite shapes and have the student name the pieces in each one.

Ways to Teach It
Provide pattern blocks and solid blocks for students to build a composite, trade with a partner, and add one more shape.
Show one composite figure and ask students to describe two different ways it could be separated into familiar shapes.
Play a silhouette challenge where partners select and arrange shapes to cover a target without gaps or overlaps.
Design a playground picture from paper shapes, then identify the shapes used for the slide, roof, tunnel, and steps.
