The Standard
Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name familiar two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes in classroom objects. They describe where one object is using words such as above, below, beside, in front of, and behind.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student says, "The clock is a circle above the shelf," and "The cube is beside the cone." The student uses a shape name and a position word together without reversing the relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use an object's name instead of its shape or call every four-sided shape a square. They may reverse position words, especially in front of and behind.
How to Assess It
- Place a cylinder behind a cube and a triangle card above both. Ask the student to name the shapes and describe their positions in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Hide shape blocks around the room, then have students name each shape and tell where it was found.
Show a classroom photo and ask, "Which shapes do you see, and what is beside the rectangle?"
Play shape-position Simon Says with directions such as, "Put the cone behind the cube."
Draw a simple classroom map using shape symbols, then describe where the door, rug, and tables are located.
