What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students analyze, compare, and sort flat and solid shapes in different sizes and orientations. They use informal language for attributes such as sides, corners, equal lengths, curved surfaces, rolling, and stacking.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student groups differently sized and turned triangles together by noticing that each has three straight sides and three corners. The student explains how a cube and sphere differ using visible or touchable attributes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may sort by color or size when the chosen rule concerns shape, or reject a turned shape as a different kind. They may describe only a familiar object name without discussing attributes.
How to Assess It: Give the student mixed flat and solid shapes in varied sizes and orientations. Ask the student to sort them, state the rule, and compare two shapes from different groups.
